- 1. Katherine Brown murdered

- January 18, 2001 Barrington, RI:
Katherine Brown, 20 a college student, was brutally murdered,
allegedly by an abusive boyfriend in his parent’s driveway in a
quiet suburban community, a short distance from our home.

- 2. CT Teen burned imitating MTV stunt
-
- January 29, 2001 Torrington, CT: Two friends poured gasoline
on the legs and feet of Jason Lind, age 13, and set him afire trying
to imitate a stunt seen on MTV. After
the incident, Senator Joseph Lieberman contacted MTV’s parent
company asking for programming changes.

- 3. Navistar Workplace Shooting

- February 5, 2001 Elk Grove IL:
The country responded with numb horror to the Navistar
workplace shooting outside Chicago, where 5 people were killed and
four wounded.

- 4. Interview with my 12 year old
daughter

- February 6, 2001: As part of a worksheet she was doing, my
twelve-year-old daughter interviewed me asking, “Why is there so
much violence in the world?”

- 5. Hannibal
February 6-8, 2001: The
nation was struck by the marketing and media blitz promoting the movie
Hannibal, a grisly sequel to Silence of the Lambs.
- 6. The Patriot

- February 9, 2001. I
watched film The Patriot, a historical fiction, which
takes place during the American
Revolution. I was literally shaking after watching The Patriot
from the combination of graphic violence and dramatic themes in the film. The video ended at 10:45 pm. I was tired, but I couldn’t sleep.
My pulse and my mind were both racing after the movie.
The main
character, Benjamin Martin blames his own inaction for the loss of his
sons at the hands of the British. This drama, prompted me into action, and inspired the creation of Your1voice.
