May 26, 2001 To the Editor of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel I was traveling in Wisconsin on business May 23, and was
browsing the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel before breakfast at my hotel when a
headline in the Career section, “Picking mentors – even like Hannibal –
may pay off” caught my attention. The
opening sentence described Hannibal Lecter as the most captivating fictional
character of the last 20 years, calling him charming, charismatic and
deliciously evil. I find Hannibal Lecter
disgusting. The media attention surrounding Hannibal Lecter blatantly
promotes a culture of violence. Questions
gush from the media asking, “How can this happen?” after incidents of
school, workplace and domestic violence. Yet,
the print and broadcast media fail to recognize the deterioration of culture and
society caused by their daily portrayal of unspeakable acts of violence as
entertainment. It is a sad time when a respected newspaper describes
Hannibal Lecter as a personality to be esteemed or emulated.
It might be worthwhile to inform readers of two facts.
1) A week after Hannibal’s Australian opening, the Office of Film &
Literature Classification in Sydney gave the film the equivalent of an X rating
in the US, no one under 18 admitted. 2)
On Dec. 20-21, 2000, residents of Great Falls Montana, and the nation were
shocked as convicted pedophile Nathaniel Bar-Jonah was charged with kidnapping
and sexually assaulting 10-year-old Zachary Ramsay, then allegedly butchering
the boy and feeding his remains to unsuspecting neighbors.
What should we expect when a generation is given the idea that Hannibal
Lecter is entertainment? Sincerely Chuck Anastasia, Click
